Let's Get Kayaking

Our 2022 season is officially underway. Grab your kayak and a friend and enjoy the gorgeous Long Island Sound. HHYC is pleased to now offer an interactive member page to find a kayak buddy. If you have not registered yet, please go to the member log in page and sign up. Also see our new kayak links page with information on resources for kayaking and other area events.

 

    HHYC Kayak & SUP Safety Review

 
HHYC's resident American Canoe Association certified kayaking instructor, Jean Kostelich, conducted a review of kayak fundamentals & safety topics for club members.
The topics covered included:

 

  • Essential equipment: life jacket, water bottle, first aid kit, cell phone or radio in a dry bag

 

 

  • Seasonal clothing: Water is still very cold-if you are planning to go out, a wet or drysuit is still advised 

 

 

       plus visual check of conditions

 

 

  • Trip planning: Find a kayak buddy using our new member forum/ let launch crew know your trip plans/Log out on kayak board on lower deck 

 

  • Learn emergency contacts & procedures-Use VHS 68 for radios-cell phones; 914-834-9418 for launch office.

Every Wednesday evening this season, HHYC will host a potluck kayak night at 6:30 pm. Meet at the club deck.
Each week there will be a different program such as:
 
  • Short club paddle
  • Skills practice
  • Fun & games on the water
  • Relay races
  • Guest speakers
  • How tos
  • Assisted self rescue
  • Boat & gear repair
  • Kayak film festival
  • Kayak camping
  • Kayak racing

Our resident ACA instructors Jean & Bea will facilitate instruction of many of the skills oriented topics. 
​
Our on-line forum, and our monthly group paddles
and picnics will introduce you to other members
and make new paddling partners.
 
Members may also choose to attend additional
one-on-one training classes to improve their paddling
skills.
